Nearsighted Treatment

More and more children are becoming myopic now than in the past. Not only does this significantly affect their vision, learning and daily functions, but it also can increase their risk of developing eye pathology, like retinal detachments, glaucoma and even cataracts. Intervening with various myopia management options can reduce their risk of this.

We have several options that typically slow the development and progression of myopia or nearsightedness that is much more common now in children. Orthokeratology, or corneal reshaping therapy, uses a molding version of a rigid contact lens to change the focusing power of the cornea. These lenses are worn while sleeping and allow children and adults to see clearly at distance without wearing glasses or contacts while awake.

Dr. Rebuck is certified through several programs to provide access to multiple brands of lenses.

Contact Lenses

Dr. Rebuck is also a certified provider for MiSight contact lenses, the only FDA approved soft contact for myopia management in the US.  For more information on the MiSight lenses, click https://coopervision.com/myopia-management.

  • The First and Only. MiSight® 1 day is the first and only FDA-approved* soft contact lens to slow the progression of myopia in children aged 8 -12 at the initiation of treatment.
  • Clinically Proven and Safe. Over a 3-year period, slowed myopia progression 59% on average, reduced eye lengthening by 52% on average, and 41% of eyes had no progression. Over a 6-year period, children wearing MiSight 1 day progressed less than 1.00D on average.
  • Parent-Approved. 90% of parents whose children wore MiSight® 1 day contact lenses reported that their children were happy wearing MiSight® 1 day lenses.
  • Child Friendly. After using MiSight® 1 day contact lenses for three years, 90% of children still strongly preferred them over their glasses.

Dr. Rebuck can also prescribe various concentrations of a once daily eye drop called atropine that relaxes the focusing mechanisms of the eye, slightly enlarging the pupil, and altering peripheral defocus of light striking the retina. This has been shown to also slow the progression of myopia and can be used in conjunction with Orthokeratology. These drops are not typically available at most pharmacies and usually are shipped to the patient.
